One day hike with a stunning view at Lake Wanaka, Makarora Valley and the Southern Alps.
Mt Shrimpton Track is part of Mt Aspiring National Park. It has its beginning in small town Makarora (between Hawea and Haast). To be more specific it starts from local DOC Office.
I wouldn’t say that Mt Shrimpton track is very demanding, but for sure I’d put it on my “hiking and sweating list”. Short and intensive. 5 hours, 6 kilometers. At first, it sounds like a piece of cake but then we look at the vertical differential and we see that it will be quite something… From 344 to 1161 meters “something”.
Bush walk, this is how you can describe most of the track. The vast majority of the track leads among trees endemic to New Zealand, such as silver beech, kahikatea and rimu trees. And between all of that bird’s roister. The higher you climb the louder it gets. And if you’re lucky enough you will not only hear them but maybe also spot somebody too.
That day when I hiked Mt Shrimpton Track I heard Tui and Kea from the distance and I saw playful Fantail. I adore Fantails for they playfulness and curiosity. They love getting to humans as close as possible. They fly, they jump, they watch and they talk 🙂
And after maybe 2 hours we leave the forest (or bush as Kiwis prefer to call it). We finally get the view of beautiful Makarora Valley, the Southern Alps and a tiny little bit of Lake Wanaka. Now we have to look for orange posts. there is always one orange post on the horizon…. yeah but not this time. Nobody told me, I haven’t read either that I’m not gonna see the summit. The track doesn’t go to the very top. It finishes somewhere half way.
I overcame the shock, disbelief and a little bit of: “what the f***!!!” and I just started enjoying the view. You can’t be too upset. At the end, they leave you with damn good view 🙂
