Ben Lomond is 1748 meters high mountain with the 360-degree panoramic view of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, Remarkables and the Southern Alps. Time to reach the top is 6-8 hours. The track climbs 1400 meters above the lake level. At the beginning the degree of difficulty is not too big, it changes though from Ben Lomond Saddle. Last 422 meters are pretty intensive.
Ben Lomond Track starts from the same point as Skyline Gondola, which is nearly the center of the town. It’s a real bonus, cause you don’t need a car to get there. We all know that sometimes just getting to the track is a real pain in the ass 🙂 Another bonus – you can save some time and few kilometers… yeah but not money. The price of gondola ride is NZ$33.
Is the gondola ride worth it? Well… it’s bit pricey and not very spectacular. You can walk a bit, sweat a bit and save some money for better things 🙂
The track is well marked till the Ben Lomond Saddle. After that orange poles disappear. You just make your way to the top. Ben Lomond Track goes through the forest than passing Skyline Gondola upper station the view opens and there is nothing more than little shrubs and tussocks.
On the saddle they put chicky little bench… very tempting bench… with the awesome view… so awesome that you have to push yourself to move your ass again 🙂 Otherwise you would just sit there and look at the summit. But yeah, one more hour and you reach the top. The view is stunning, sooo jucy 🙂
When paving the trail from the saddle to the summit keep to the right side of the mountain. Especially important in bad weather.
In the winter you have to be prepared for snow, ice, have appropriate equipment and skills.
